A Mountain Romance at Winter Park Resort

Katherine & Darren  |  August 26th  |  {Rockstar Venue} Winter Park Resort

From the bride, Katherine:
The weather was perfect all weekend long and the day of the wedding was no exception. The ceremony took place at 5:30 in the evening, after the ceremony we got to kick off the reception to an amazing sunset over the continental divide.

My husband and I first met in Winter Park and we wanted to share that with our family and friends who live in Maine and Indiana; most had never been to Colorado before.  Not only are the mountains a majestic place to exchange vows, but it is a perfect way to showcase your beautiful state.

Our most special moment was on the day of our wedding when my husband and I took a moment to enjoy the sunset together following the ceremony. Shortly before I had met Darren, his mother had lost her battle with breast cancer so at that moment while watching the sunset, we knew Diann was there celebrating with us in spirit.

When it came to decorating our wedding, Darren and I decided to have fun with recycling & building. We invaded our neighbor’s back yard (with their permission, of course) and built our escort card stand, chalkboard and guestbook from their scrap wood, then jazzed it up with a little paint. We now use them as decorations in our new house.

For a personal touch from Darren’s side of the family, we decided to take his grandfather’s famous pickle recipe and make “Papaw’s Pickles” as party favors for our wedding guests.

When it came to dessert, we opted to make our own, our awesome friends and family helped us make cupcakes, cookies and whoopee pies.  Of course, we felt our guests should have cake too, but we have never cared too much for wedding cake so we decided to get an ice cream cake from Dairy Queen. It sounds tacky, but we couldn’t have been happier with it.  Any excuse to eat ice cream cake is fine with us and we thought a wedding seemed like worthy enough excuse, it was Deeelish!

One of our favorite moments was our first dance to Taj Mahal’s “Lovin’ in my baby’s eyes” When we first met, Darren would make me mixed cd’s and this was always a favorite song of ours, we knew it would be perfect for our first dance.

Our advice: Don’t forget to take this time and enjoy the planning process with your fiancé. More importantly, don’t let the little things make or break your day, this is a celebration and you want to remember it as the happiest day of your life. I highly recommend getting a wedding coordinator or event planner, it is well worth the money to be able to enjoy your wedding day without any worries.

{Rockstar} Venue, Caterer & Lodging:  The Lodge at Sunspot, Winter Park Resort. Beautiful location & great people to work with.

Floral Design & Event Planner: Rami Carter, Pick Me! Weddings. Rami is one of the kindest most creative people I have ever met, she took my ideas and added her own little tweaks to it to give it that extra something special. I couldn’t have been happier with her work. She also made sure everything went smoothly for us so we didn’t have to worry about anything the whole day. Basically, all we had to do was show up. Not only is Rami a great wedding planner but is an extremely talented florist.

Photographer: Melissa Beck Photography. Melissa was amazing, not only did she take beautiful photos of everyone, but she was great to have on our wedding team. She captured all the images we had hoped for and more. I highly recommend her for both your engagement and wedding photography.

DJ: Yeti Entertainment. Michael was great at keeping the party going for us, he has a great set-up and is so fun to work with.

Wedding Gown: Tara Keely from Blue Bridal Boutique

Honeymoon Location: We just got back from a “Mini-moon” in South Dakota where we went pheasant hunting with our two German Shorthaired Pointers. We will be going on the real honeymoon to Belize  once ski season ends.
