Katie & Spencer  |  June 22nd  |  Colorado Springs, Colorado

From the bride, Katie:
My friend’s husband who was stationed in Afghanistan asked if I would send a care package to one of his single friends. I did and soon after that, Spencer and I begun sending messages and letters back and forth to each other. We learned all about each other through our letters. We began skyping as much as we could and I would send as many care packages as I could.  I actually got to meet Spencer’s parents and sister before really meeting him! When we finally met in person, it was more like seeing someone who you hadn’t seen in years. We had already known so much about each other from our letters. The next day we “officially” started dating. It’s so crazy how true the saying “when you know, you know”.

Searching for a location in Colorado Springs was one of the hardest things about planning our wedding. We came across Flying W Ranch, which I knew would be perfect for the handmade, rustic-like look I wanted to achieve.  Sadly, the ranch was completely destroyed in the Waldo Canyon fire just 3 days after our wedding.

One of my favorite moments was when Spencer and I had our first look. I had debated for such a long time if we were going to do it and I was so glad we decided to. It was such a beautiful intimate moment between the two of us and we honestly both could not stop smiling! We were so giddy and ready to be married.

Spencer has a love for Vans. I am not exaggerating when I say he probably has over 50 pair of vans shoes. Since our wedding was already so casual we asked all the groomsmen to wear gray vans.  Spencer bought a special pair of gray and blue which matched what he was wearing perfectly. Being 5’10” I wasn’t about to wear heels so I found a gray pair of oxford vans to wear.  Even the little ring bearer had his own pair of vans.

Our ceremony was very simple and non traditional and we were so blessed to have Spencer’s grandpa marry us!  He kept things light and made everyone laugh. which was one thing I loved.

Our reception was located in a building that was an old theater and had tons of quirky little qualities about it. We absolutely loved it! It had an old wooden bar, which had lots of fun lively decorations on the walls that made decorating a breeze!

My Advice:  Well, first I would say this is YOUR wedding! You can have whatever you want (or do not want) and that is what is so great and unique about creating your own special day. Next, I want to say that in doing so, make sure you give yourself enough time to plan everything you want and don’t slack off during that process. If you’re doing lots of DIY elements, ask for help and plan craft days. The time goes by so quick!  Lastly, have fun with it and DON’T STRESS!
